The Hunt for Red October is a suspenseful novel by writer Tom Clancy. CIA agent Jack Ryan is called in to assist with a problem that could create world chaos if it gets out. The relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union is already on shaky ground. When a Soviet agent with high security clearance decides to forego his allegiance to his country and his government in favour of the U.S., top secret agencies panic all over the world. The threat of nuclear war between these two powerful countries seems unavoidable. Agent Ryan must use all of his skill to prevent this dangerous clash from happening. In this book early on I understood some of the characters, in the idea of who is the protagonist and who is the main hero. basically it was difficult because the story focused on different points of views by going on one character to the next. in this case the main character would be Jack Ryan who is an analyst for the CIA who lives in London with his wife and children. Though his training is in economics and history, he is often called in to consult the American and British governments about international military matters, particularly relating to the Soviet Union. Jack does not have extensive military training but he is often involved in secret military operations. His involvement with the Red October begins when he shows the surveillance photographs taken of the submarine by British intelligence. Jack is personally connected to most of the vital characters in the novel, including many of the British and American military and intelligence communities, as well as the computer genius, Skip Tyler. These personal connections allow him to act as messenger for very important missions.In this case Jack puts himself at risk and high exposure dealing with different people who have relations with different countries. Jack's concerns for his safety and the welfare of the United States are balanced by his concern for his personal life. He creates a risky life not only for himself but also for his family because of his job. A quote that explains how he is losing his family because of his work is when he is told by his boss to stay longer. "mind if I phone my wife?, i don't want her to drive out to the airport for I plan I'am not on."(90). In my opinion Jack does not have all the time in the world for his family any more as more problems occur during the novel he maybe losing his time to spend with his family, he possibly might be in a situation where he may lose his life and not get to see his family.
